Travel advisors can access a wide range of free training to help them stay up-to-date, specialize in a niche, and gain valuable knowledge. Here are the most common options for finding free training:

1. Supplier-Specific Training

This is the most direct and common way for travel advisors to get free education. Travel suppliers want advisors to be experts in their products so they can sell them more effectively.

  • Online Academies/Certifications: Almost every major cruise line, theme park, hotel chain, and tour operator offers a free online training program and free instructions to using the travel agent free booking portal. These are often called "academies" or "universities." For example, Disney has the Disney College of Knowledge, while Royal Caribbean has its own certification program. By completing these courses, advisors not only gain in-depth knowledge but also often unlock special perks, higher commission rates, and access to exclusive promotions.

  • Webinars and Virtual Events: Suppliers frequently host free webinars and virtual events to introduce new products, destinations, or promotions. These are a great way to get a quick update on a specific topic and ask questions directly to a supplier representative.

  • Familiarization (FAM) Trips: While not always entirely free, FAM trips are heavily discounted trips offered to travel advisors to give them firsthand experience with a cruise line/ship, theme park, destination, or resort. The goal is for the advisor to personally experience the product so they can sell it with confidence. You may have to pay for your airfare or a nominal fee, but the bulk of the trip (accommodations, meals, and activities) is usually covered.

2. Host Agency Training

If you are affiliated with a host agency, they are a primary source of free training and resources.

  • On-Demand Libraries: Most host agencies have a learning management system (LMS) with an extensive library of recorded webinars, courses, and guides on various topics, from business operations to sales and marketing.

  • Live Training: Host agencies often host live webinars, workshops, and in-person training events where advisors can connect with other agents and learn from industry experts.

  • Mentorship Programs: Many host agencies offer free mentorship or coaching programs where new advisors are paired with experienced professionals who can guide them through the early stages of their career.

3. Industry Organizations and Trade Publications

Professional organizations and industry media are excellent sources for free content and events.

  • Webinars: Organizations like Travel Leading Network (TLN) offer a variety of free webinars on topics like marketing, business management, industry trends, creating social media, creating a presence on the web, etc.. While CLIA certification courses may have a small fee, these webinars provide valuable, free knowledge and in many instances accreditation in a particular area - such as" autism friendly advisor."

  • Trade Shows and Events: Attending trade shows (like Cruise 360 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida is a great way to meet suppliers, attend free seminars, and network with other advisors. For a really small attendance fee you will be able to attend many free lunches, dinners, courses, ship inspections with free lunch, and the trade show. This is must within the first year or two of becoming a travel advisor. The event usually takes place in the Broward County Convention Hall located right at the cruise port - Port Everglades - toward the end of April each year. Signing up early gets you your choice of courses, events, and ship inspections.

  • Trade Publications: Online travel trade publications like Travel Weekly, TravelAge West, and Recommend often have dedicated sections for travel agent training, news, and upcoming events. Subscribing to their newsletters is a great way to stay informed.

4. General Online Learning Platforms

Beyond the travel industry, there are platforms that offer general business and marketing courses that are highly relevant to a travel advisor's career.

  • YouTube: Many travel advisors and industry experts have their own YouTube channels where they share tips on everything from how to set up your business to how to use specific booking systems.

By taking advantage of these resources, a travel advisor can build a solid foundation of knowledge and stay current with an ever-changing industry, all without a significant financial investment.
